Chapter 1: The calm before the storm
Not much could be heard in the early hours of dawn except for a few nocturnal creatures finishing their nightly tasks and the early avens who would fill the land with their routined morning songs. The sun’s rays had only started to poke out from the safety of the horizon, slowly starting its ascent into the sky as the crickets had begun to slow their chirping to match the bird’s chorus before they went to off to their slumber. While this is indeed a peaceful setting, it wasn’t for the male youngling slowly making his way out of the forest’s cover. His name would be long forgotten as he didn’t want to be brought back into memories of his abandonment or to see the face of his mother no longer.
His stomach had rumbled with ease, signaling to the youngster that he would have to eat soon. This caused him to frown greatly as he had barely grasped the skills of hunting and he was too young to take down any sort of prey that was indigenous to the area. His silent prayers were answered when a whiff of what seemed to be meat had permeated the area, his mind instantly focused on making his way towards the potential meal.
It had only been a mere 5 minutes until he found a few chunks of meat inside of a rather odd structure. It held a rectangular shape and had countless holes in it while the material looked to be shiny and smooth. He was rather suspicious of the object, it was something he had never seen before and it looked very out of place in its surroundings. He stayed a good distance away from the cage, his eyes occasionally darting to the chunks of meat placed inside and the area around him.
This had continued for about 15 minutes until he grew fed up with his body’s needs, his instincts kicking in to eat the food that had graciously appeared for him. The cage was rather large considering his small size which made it easy for him to enter with no problems. His eyes remained solely focused on the meat and began to pick at it with his teeth to take it out of the cage. He hadn’t realized the meat was attached to a trigger and when he pulled too hard the cage snapped shut abruptly behind him, causing a loud yelp in surprise as a response.
Instinctively biting the sides of the cage he growled and barked for what seemed like hours, eventually losing hope that he would escape. His ears had caught onto a crunch of twigs before yelping in pain at the tranquilizer on his hind leg. Desperate now to leave he began to bash his frame against the cage hoping for an escape but with every moment that passed by he grew more tired and his limbs grew heavy.
Defeated, he fell to the floor of his makeshift prison with a small thud before his eyes caught a glimpse of a creature he hadn’t seen before. Its skin was bare and had extremely little fur on its body save for the top of the head. It wore odd objects on its skin to blend in with the environment around it, which was odd to the youngster. It also held a rather shiny looking stick that had a weird shape to it, the unknown creature held it close to its form for safety. His eyesight grew hazy as the last thing he was able to consciously see was the weird creature leaning over the cage and pulling out another shiny object that was emitting a strange tune, “Send the truck over, we caught another one.”
